iPhone 2G (1st Generation) Opening Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to open your iPhone 2G aka the first generation iPhone. This is not an easy job and you will most likely scratch/bend the iphone back cover no matter how careful you are.

Stuff you will need:

  • A few small screwdrivers (phillips, flat head)
  • Ziplock bags for screws and small parts
  • X-acto knife with the flat #17 blade

iphone 2g antenna cover Use a plastic iphone opening tool to pry around the edges of the black antenna cover.
iphone 2g antenna cover 2 After you push the cover down a little you should be able to take it off.
iphone back cover screws In this picture you can see the antenna and the three back cover screws (circled in red). Remove the three screws.
iphone sim card tray Use something thin like a screwdriver to pop out the sim card tray.

Use your flat x-acto blade or small flathead screwdriver to create a gap between the back cover and the frame of the iphone.

After you create a gap use your plastic iphone opening tool/thin flathead screwdriver/x-acto blade to pry around the edges of the cover and release the clips that hold it to the frame. This is not nearly as simple as it sounds and will take time.

CAUTION: You may feel a strong urge to throw your iPhone out of the nearest window during this step!
